Fund aid to R&D
Taiwan’s cabinet is to set up an NT$10bn ($312m) fund to aid R&D of the island’s key technology, the Government Information Office announced.
The fund will co-operate with the existing NT$80bn Development Fund, which has a stated aim to upgrade industry, and which functions in a similar manner to a venture capital firm.
Areas defined as key technology and which will be boosted by the new fund include computers and IT, semiconductors, optoelectronics and telecoms.
One stated objective of the Taiwanese government is to transform the island into a high-technology research centre for Asia. The fund is the latest part of this drive.
Taiwan is already a major international player in semiconductors, computer parts, peripherals and completed PCs, having last year become the world’s third largest manufacturer.
